Emelyn Gardner visited Gilboa in 1912, and ended up spending six summers here, collecting traditional ballads, popular beliefs, superstitions, practices, and tales of the hills. “Since information on such matters usually comes not from direct inquiry, I chatted casually and quietly with all sorts of people and tried to become thoroughly acquainted with them and with their ways. After six summers of field work . . . I felt that, while my collection was not exhaustive, I had sufficient material to justify an attempt at a classification and a study of it.” Her study was a 370-page volume on local folklore that Stonecrest Industries has reprinted as a centennial edition. While generally drawn from the Gilboa-Conesville area, the content provides a fascinating glimpse into the folklore common at that time. What is Folklore? Folklore is the collection of stories, legends, music, superstitions, proverbs, and customs that identify the culture of a group. Folklore is “the hidden, submerged culture lying behind the shadow of official civilization,” according to Richard Dorson (Folklore Forum 1, 1968). As people migrated and settled in our hills, the culture they brought with them—and modified to accommodate their new homeland—became part of their local folklore. These traditions were then passed forward to the next generations. In 1912 and the summers that followed, Gardner explored the folklore of Gilboa and Conesville and their neighbors and researched their traditions back to their roots in other countries.
